The history of my ancestors was well known within the family, but until recent generations was not openly discussed. Many years ago, my grandfather traced the family tree, establishing the link between our branch of the family to David Hartley, his brothers and his father. Since my Grandfathers death, much of the information and documentation that he had gathered has come to light and is made up of information from various sources.

Probably one of the most fascinating to me is some pages preserved from the front of an old family bible. On these pages, my ancestors had recorded the births of all the children within my direct line of descendants, starting with the birth at 12 noon on the 24th May 1811 of Grace Hartley ('King' David Hartley's Grand-daughter). In all, eleven births and two deaths are recorded on this document, covering three generations; the final entry being that of my Great Grandfather, Percy Burnaby Hartley on the 14th May 1887.

The picture below shows four generations of Hartley's, from my Great Grandfather Percy (right), through my Grandfather Maurice (left), to my Father John, who is pictured holding me in his arms. This picture would probably have been taken shortly after my birth in October 1966 and was taken in front of the houses at Stoodley Glen in Eastwood. At the time, My Grandfather lived at number 9, My Great Grandfather at number 11 and my Great Aunt Mildred with her husband Ronald Butterworth and their daughter Kathleen at number 13.

The pages in this section detail the sources of information used to compile and verify the family tree together with details of some of the homes they lived in, occupations and many photographs from the collection left by my Grandfather.
