Family History |
The picture below is undoubtedly the oldest photograph in my possession. Unfortunately I am not able to confirm the subject pictured in the photograph, but by dating the photograph by its method of production and judging by the age of the subject I am able to narrow it down to two strong possibilities. The photograph is actually known as a Daguerreotype, produced on a silvered copper plate. The exposure would have taken up to 20 minutes before the picture was developed by holding the plate over a heated bowl of mercury and fixing in warm salt water. Because of the delicacy of the final image, these photographs were housed under glass, as this particular image is. The picture is distorted around the edges where air has entered and the surface has oxidised. The technique was developed in 1839 and was popular until the middle of the 1850's. On this basis and given the age of the man in the photograph, I believe it is one of "King" David Hartleys sons; either David (1766-1847) or Isaac (1769-1853). It is unlikely I will ever know for certain.
The next series of photographs do have confirmed subjects and are of my Great Great Grandfather Edwin Hartley and Great Great Grandmother Eliza (nee Saggers).
The next collection is of Edwin and Eliza's children, first, their eldest son Albert Edward Hartley with his wife Annie (nee Redman)
Next a photograph of Ruth Eveline Hartley with her husband James Heyhurst (below left) and a photograph of (below right, left to right) Ruth and James Heyhurst, Phoebe Millicent and her husband William Sutcliffe
Next, the youngest son Herbert Wilfred Hartley pictured in the uniform of the West Yorkshire Regiment on the left and later in life on the right.
Next a couple of photographs of my Great Grandfather, Percy Burnaby Hartley and Great Grandmother Ethel (nee Wood), on the right with my Grandfather Maurice and on the left a significant photograph of them stood on "King" David Hartleys grave at Heptonstall; significant as we always believed he had no interest in the coiners and would not talk about them. This photograph clearly shows he recognized their importance in the family history.
The next photographs show my Grandfather Maurice, with his sister, my Great Aunt Mildred (below left), and at his wedding (below centre) to my Grandmother Nancy (nee Dawson) , and my Grandmother with her parents (below right)
The following collection is of my father, John Anthony Hartley with (left to right) his mother Nancy, Grandparents Percy and Ethel, and his sister Patricia Anne.
The next photographs show my father
(below left) and mother Angela (nee Williamson) (below centre) with my
Grandfathers dog Angus, and on their wedding day.
Finally there are pictures of myself at my wedding to Andrea (nee Falkingham), with my father and grandfather, taken at my sister Suzannes wedding in 1998 and finally at the bottom, the most recent photograph, taken in late December 2005, with my Grandfather, Father, Myself and my twin sons, Samuel Lewis Hartley on the left and Thomas William Hartley on the right.
